Political matters have been keeping many people I know awake at night. Unfortunately, I don’t see any relief in the future. Politics is the one topic that I hardly ever discuss with friends and family; however, when I first started getting into reading about politics, no one that I knew talked about it, now that is all they want to do, especially on Facebook.
I grew up in a family that taught me that everyone should vote, but they should never talk about their vote. My parents always voted, yet they refused to discuss their votes with anyone, even each other. When asked about this, my parents said that politics are as strong in a person as their religion. They believed political beliefs were almost sacred.
It wasn’t until I was well into adulthood that I understood what they were talking about. Maybe it is because they rubbed off on me, but I don’t like to discuss my political beliefs. My beliefs are so tightly wound around who I am that I find no reason to discuss them with another person. I don’t want to convert someone to my way of thinking because their beliefs also make up who they are, so why discuss it?
I have many Facebook politicians among my Facebook friends. Election season is bad for Facebook. The Facebook politicians post daily about their beliefs, or why the other guy’s beliefs are wrong. I always pondered if they really believe they are informing people, or are they just posting with the intent of annoying people. Facebook appears to be their personal echo chamber.
In the past couple of years, I have started using Facebook less and less. Now, even out of election season, I see endless political posts. It makes me miss when all I saw on Facebook was pictures of people’s dinner. What happened to the good ole food pictures?
Maybe someday soon, I will just stop getting on Facebook. Life would seem much simpler. I only use it to keep in touch with a few old friends. I do occasionally find a good post or two, but mostly It just makes me remind myself that I don’t unfriend people for sharing their political beliefs, maybe I should just start trolling them with fact checking websites.
Do you know any Facebook politicians? How do you deal with them?
